Richland, Wash. (April, 2013) — When Rob Griffin graduated from the UC Davis wine program in 1977, he ignored the advice of his instructors to stay in California. Instead, he headed to the Pacific Northwest with a dream of crafting fine artisan wine in Washington State.

Griffin now holds the honor of being Washington State’s most enduring winemaker; making wine on a continuous basis in Washington longer than any other winemaker in the state. His Barnard Griffin Winery of Richland, Wash., is celebrating its 30th year in operation.

Head winemaker Griffin, along with his wife and business partner Deborah Barnard, launched their Winery label and venture in 1983 and established the Richland facility, located in the Tri-Cities area in Eastern Washington, in 1996.

As part of the 30-year celebration, they’ve completed a total expansion and renovation of their winery property. “This is the next step for us as a business; to grow and to incorporate the second generation,” says Griffin. “We can’t wait to show it off to folks who haven’t had a chance to visit lately. It’s quite an expansive renovation inside and out. It’s a whole new winery.”

“Slow and steady growth was and is our Mantra. And it worked,” said partner and wife Deborah, upon reflection on the winery’s success.  “With our winery’s 30^th year anniversary, we are one of the top wineries in the state by any measure and this is out of a field of more than 700 Washington state wineries.”

As part of the new remodel/expansion, Deborah Barnard’s fused-glass studio, db gallery, was given a new home within the winery complex.  Deborah teaches glass classes, constructs her own work, and hosts nationally acclaimed guest artists.

In its first year of the winery’s operation, 400 cases of Fumé Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling were produced. In its second year, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon were added to the production list. Today Barnard Griffin is now one of the largest privately owned Washington wineries, producing 70,000 cases per year.

When asked what makes him the most proud regarding his wines over the last 30 years, Rob cited three achievements:  “I suppose that number one for me is our focus on creating a master quality wine throughout our entire line. From Fumé to Cabernet, each wine is varietally accurate. This is difficult to achieve and requires constant vigilance. Secondly, we work extraordinarily hard to maintain Vintage-to-Vintage consistency, even though Mother Nature likes to throw us a curve ball from time to time.

Thirdly, I am proud of the extent of the recognition our wines have received. And of all the recognition, I am particularly pleased with having won Gold or Better at the San Francisco Chronicle’s Wine Competition for our Rosé of Sangiovese for seven years in a row. And, this wine competition is based on a double-blind evaluation by 50 – 60 judges, which is a formidable gauntlet for any varietal.  Plus our Cabernets have won Gold or better in the Washington State Wine Competition for five years in a row.  I feel that this underscores our approach to constancy and consistency.”

Barnard Griffin currently produces two labels. The Reserve Label wines are crafted in very limited quantities from the best vineyard lots in the region, using European, French, and American oak.

Barnard Griffin’s signature Tulip Label wine is one of Washington’s most easily recognized wines and is available in restaurants and stores across the country.

Rob looks back fondly on his career as a winemaker. From his first days in Sonoma Valley and as a student at the Viticulture and Enology program at the University of California, Davis, he always recognized the great potential of Washington Wine Country, which is on the same northern latitude as France’s winegrowing regions.

He began his career in Washington wine at Preston Wine Cellars, where he worked as winemaker for seven years and was awarded the first ever ‘Double Gold’ by the Enological Society of the Northwest. He later became head winemaker at Hogue Cellars, where he worked for eight years.

“I had a wealth of wonderful experiences. Of course, when I married Deborah in 1980 and we opened Barnard Griffin in 1983, I didn’t know we would be destined for 30 years of success.  But what a wonderful milestone we are celebrating, not just for ourselves but also for the State of Washington, its wines, and our fans.”

The influential SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE Wine Competition is the largest competition for American wines in the world and features all significant types and styles of wine, from each major wine-producing region in the United States.

The judging took place in January, 2012.  Judges representing trade, education, media, retail, and restaurants throughout the United States evaluated a record 5,500 entries, surpassing its previous record of 5,050 last year.

The influential SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE Wine Competition is the largest competition for American wines in the world and features all significant types and styles of wine, from each major wine-producing region in the United States.

The judging took place in January, 2011.  Judges representing trade, education, media, retail, and restaurants throughout the United States evaluated a record 5,050 entries from 3,300 wineries up from 4,913 entries last year.

Winemaker Rob Griffin says of his latest Limited Production releases:  “Some say the smaller the quantity made, the better the wine. A true Washington Wine Pioneer, Griffin has been crafting fine wine

RICHLAND, WA:  (August, 2010) – Rob Griffin, co-owner and winemaker at Barnard Griffin winery in Richland, Washington who is celebrating 33 years of Washington state winemaking this year, has received another of the state’s top winemaking awards – Honorary Vintner by Auction of Washington Wines: http://www.auctionofwashingtonwines.org/Chairs-HonoraryVintner.cfm.

Beginning his Washington career in 1977, Griffin has been making wine on a continuing basis longer than any other state of Washington winemaker.

Washington is the second largest wine producing state in the nation.  Since 1999, the Auction of Washington Wines has honored industry leaders for contributions to the Washington wine industry. Selected by their peers and confirmed by the Washington Wine Commission, the Honorary Vintner Chair represents the state’s more than 600 wineries.  The Auction, entitled “2010 – A Wine Odyssey,” will take place August 19 – 21st.

“I am extremely proud to be part of an effort that has raised millions of dollars over the years to help kids get the best care possible at Seattle Children’s Hospital,” Griffin said. “I thank all who have been a part of this important and on-going effort.”

The Road to Honorary Vintner

Griffin graduated with honors from the University of California at Davis in fermentation science in 1975.  As a student, Griffin had recognized the great potential of Washington Wine country, which is on the same northern latitude as France’s winegrowing regions.

Against the advice of his college professors, who believed Washington had too cool a climate to sustain wine grapes, Griffin came to Washington in April 1977 to become Preston Winery’s first winemaker. He quickly established himself as an accomplished artist by winning the first Best of Show at the Seattle Enological Society’s Northwest Wine Festival with his 1977 Chardonnay. Griffin worked at Preston for seven years.

In 1980 Deborah Barnard moved to Washington and married Rob Griffin. Griffin began making his own “Barnard Griffin” label in 1983 with his wife. In its first year, 400 cases of Fume Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling were produced.  In its second year, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon were added to the production list.

From 1984 – 1991, Griffin was Winemaker and General Manager at Hogue Cellars, and consultant to several Washington producers until the 1996 completion of the Barnard Griffin Winery and Tasting Room in Richland, Washington.

Among the winery’s many accolades their 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon won Best Red, Best Cabernet Sauvignon and Best of Show at the Washington State Wine Competition held this summer.  This is the second year in a row that their Cabernet has won Best of Show from the largest blind tasting in the state of Washington.  Their 2008 Tulip Riesling was voted by WINE SPECTATOR Magazine as one of the TOP 100 Most Exciting Wines of 2009.  In January of this year, Barnard Griffin’s 2009 Rosé of Sangiovese received a Gold medal in the SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE’s Wine Competition.

This is the fifth year in a row that Rob Griffin’s Rosé has won gold or better in the largest American wine competition in the world. In 2006, Barnard Griffin was voted “Winery of The Year” by WINE PRESS NORTHWEST Magazine.

Added to the executive team for Washington’s 10^th Largest Winery

RICHLAND, WA: – Elise (Barnard) Griffin graduated in 2009 with a business and marketing degree from Washington State University (WSU).  Elise has subsequently joined the marketing and sales team for Barnard Griffin, the winery founded and operated by her parents, Rob Griffin and Deborah Barnard.

A Washington native, Elise was born and raised in the Tri-Cities area attending local grade and high schools there.  With her parents being Washington wine pioneers, Elise literally grew up in the wine industry in the second largest wine producing state in the country.  Elise went on to study at WSU in Pullman, WA.  Elise joined the Barnard Griffin sales and marketing team in the fall of 2009.

Her family’s Washington Wine heritage is prodigious.  Rob Griffin, co-owner and head winemaker at Barnard Griffin winery in Richland, Washington, celebrated 33 years of Washington winemaking this spring.  Beginning his Washington career at Preston Wine Cellars in 1977, Griffin is currently the longest practicing winemaker in Washington State.  Rob and Deborah built a winemaking facility in Richland in 1996.  Barnard Griffin has now become one of the largest privately owned Washington wineries.

Rob Griffin is longest running winemaker in the state

RICHLAND, WA:  (June, 2010) – Rob Griffin, co-owner and head winemaker at Barnard Griffin winery in Richland, Washington, celebrated 33 years of Washington winemaking this spring; furthering his tenure as a Washington wine pioneer.  Beginning his Washington career at Preston Wine Cellars in 1977, Griffin is currently the longest practicing winemaker in Washington State.

Among the many, many accolades for Rob’s winemaking, his 2008 Tulip Riesling was voted by WINE SPECTATOR Magazine as one of the TOP 100 Most Exciting Wines of 2009.  In June of 2010, Rob’s 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon won the triple triumph of Best Red, Best Cabernet Sauvignon and Best In Show in the Washington State Wine Competition.  Barnard Griffin was voted “Winery of The Year” in 2006 by WINE PRESS NORTHWEST Magazine. In January of this year, Barnard Griffin’s 2009 Rosé of Sangiovese received a Gold medal in the SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE’s Wine Competition. This is the fifth year in a row (5X!!!) that Rob Griffin’s Rosé has won gold or better in this; the largest American wine competition in the world.

A graduate of the Viticulture and Enology program at University of California Davis, Rob Griffin moved to Washington State in 1977 after working several years in the Sonoma Valley.  As a student, Griffin had recognized the great potential of Washington Wine Country, which is on the same northern latitude as France’s winegrowing regions. Griffin began his career in Washington wine at Preston Wine Cellars, where he worked as winemaker for seven years and was awarded the first ever ‘Double Gold’ by the Enological Society of the Northwest. He later became head winemaker at Hogue Cellars, where he worked for eight years.

In 1980 Deborah Barnard moved to Washington and married Rob Griffin. Barnard Griffin winery was established in 1983. In its first year, 400 cases of Fume Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling were produced.  In its second year, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon were added to the production list.  Rob and Deborah built a winemaking facility in Richland in 1996.  Barnard Griffin has now become one of the largest privately owned Washington wineries.

Deborah Barnard Turns Warm Glass into Hot Art

RICHLAND, WA: – In 1980, Washington wine pioneer and fused glass artist, Deborah Barnard, moved to Washington and married Rob Griffin. Barnard Griffin winery was established in 1983. In its first year, 400 cases of Fume Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling were produced.  In its second year, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon were added to the production list.  Deborah and her husband built a winemaking facility in Richland in 1996.  Barnard Griffin has now become one of the largest privately owned Washington wineries and an important stop on any winery tour.

Deborah’s journey with glass began in college with stained glass. In 2004, Deborah returned to glass only this time using heat; kilns and torches. After taking classes at Bullseye Glass Company in Portland, Oregon, Deborah continues to define her glass techniques from beads to fused glass and into architectural elements. Deborah opened her warm glass studio, “db Studios,” at Barnard Griffin Winery in the Fall 2007 and became a Bullseye Resource Center selling Bullseye sheet glass in Fall 2008. Classes in warm glass are taught at the winery.

The primary focus of her work in glass has its roots in many years of sewing and a love of textiles. Deborah enjoys blending unexpected color combinations of glass and working with nature themes. To enhance her art work, Deborah often includes glass elements she has made in a torch flame. Her current work explores the reactive qualities of metal elements contained in glass.

Most recently precious metal components have been added to reactive glass for special effects in her work of late 2009 and early 2010. Also during this same time, Deborah has used several different types of glass including powders and vitrigraph to “paint” images onto glass. Special depth effects are achieved by firing separate layers in the kiln and then continuing to fire a second or even third time.

Current popular motifs include wine glasses with red wine and petals either expressed as a flower or individually. At this point the work centers on utilitarian items such as trays, bowls and plates.  Deborah splits her incredibly busy time between creating artisan glass and producing artisan wines. “Glass art and art in a glass, we like to say,” says the smiling Deborah Barnard glancing around her Tasting Room and Fused Glass Gallery.

The influential SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE Wine Competition is the largest competition for American wines in the world and features all significant types and styles of wine, from each major wine-producing region in the United States.  The judging took place the week of January 4, 2010.  More than 60 professional wine judges representing trade, education, media, retail, and restaurants throughout the United States evaluated a record 4,913 wines entered by wineries from across the country. Winemaker Rob Griffin says of his latest Limited Production releases:  “Some say the smaller the quantity made, the better the wine. These reds were certainly made in true ‘Garagiste’ fashion.  It is exciting to make small batch artisan wines that are generating such recognition, proving once again Washington state is one of the great wine-producing regions in the world.”

The varietal scored extremely well at the 28th annual competition held this summer at State Fair Park in Yakima that attracted 405 wines from 94 wineries in the state:

Gregoire said Barnard Griffin wines are “well worthy of this distinction” and show the winery’s “commitment to continually raising the bar of excellence.”

About the 2009 Washington State Wine Competition

The 28th annual competition at State Fair Park in Yakima attracted 405 wines from 94 wineries in the state. More than 400 people attended the award announcement, which was sponsored by the Sunshine and Wine Committee. The event helped raise funds to renovate State Fair Park’s historic buildings and provide scholarships for the Yakima Valley Community College enological program.

About Stan Clarke

Stan Clarke was active in the Washington wine industry since the 1970s. After earning a B.S. degree in viticulture from UC Davis, he began his career at Chateau Ste. Michelle, helped found Quail Run – now Covey Run – and worked as winemaker and general manager at Hyatt Vineyards.

He earned a master’s degree in teaching at Washington State University, later helping start the Institute for Encology and Viticulture at Walla Walla Community College where he remained until his death. He was an enthusiastic, energetic instructor, and preferred hands-on classes in the institute’s teaching winery.

RICHLAND, WA: Exciting new limited production wine releases from Barnard Griffin Winery, founded by Washington state wine pioneers Deborah Barnard and Rob Griffin, are here just in time for the holidays:

2007 GRENACHE

This one-of-a-kind Washington Grenache offers an enticing array of mint, orange, raspberry and brown sugar aromas. An underlying touch of mouth-watering spiciness mingles with flavors of orange, pomegranate and hints of butter. Solid acidity plays a balancing role. Try this unique wine with south-of-the-border foods such as salsas and ceviches or with spicy salami raclette.

2006 CABERNET SAUVIGNON RESERVE

Enthralling aromatically, revealing a host of plum, orange, black pepper and brown sugar scents ensconced in wood spices. Beautiful cherry, cranberry and blueberry flavors greet the palate on the attack. Full acidity offers great structure and depth. A great “ager” cab. If to be enjoyed soon, select hearty meats and rich foods that can stand up to a fleshy, full-bodied cab.

2006 CIEL DU CHEVAL MERLOT

Judiciously spiced with fragrant pipe tobacco oak aromas intertwined with orange peel and hard candy notes, the intense and concentrated personality of this ultra-premium Red Mountain merlot is filled with racy cherry, orange and cranberry flavors. Juicy acidity augments the lengthy, fruit-filled finish – a great match for grilled lamb or beef (or all by itself).

2006 PETIT VERDOT

Inviting, with warm aromas of plum, violets and stone supported by subtle notes of wood spice and vanilla, this wine possesses a dense core of pomegranate, blueberry preserves and plum flavors. Dusty tannins add structure to the mineral-infused, moderate finish. A great wine to be served with roasted duck or bison.

Winemaker Rob Griffin says of his latest Limited Production releases: “Some say the smaller the quantity made, the better the wine. These reds were certainly made in true ‘Garagiste’ fashion. It’s exciting to make small batch artisanal wines that equal any ever made in Washington.”
