Sununu: Trump can win if he 'stays professional,' 'focuses'

New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu (R) said in Thursday comments that former President Trump can win the upcoming presidential race against Vice President Harris if he “stays professional” and focused.

“In September and October, the cost of living is gonna be a very real issue in this campaign, a very real issue for Americans as long as the former president can keep his focus there and stay professional on the campaign and talk about the things that Americans wanna talk about,” Sununu told Fox News anchor Neil Cavuto on his show “Your World with Neil Cavuto.”

“As soon as he goes off tangent, that’s where he’s letting the Democrats — letting the Democrats take the election that should be his by a landslide, it really should,” Sununu continued.

Trump has slung insults at his 2024 presidential rival as her political star has risen in the last month. Backers of Trump have pushed the former president to stick with policy instead of going after his opponents.

“At the end of the day, if he can focus on those issues for the last 60 days, he should win this,” Sununu said, citing inflation, the cost of living and credit card debt, among other things.

“He should be winning big. And if he stays professional, if he focuses on the campaign, focus on those undecided voters, not just his base, that’s what matters. And that’s how he could kind of get that fire back that he had a month-and-a-half ago,” the governor added.

Former Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway said that a winning strategy for Trump involves “fewer insults” earlier this week.

“The winning formula for President Trump is very plain to see,” Conway told Fox Business anchor Larry Kudlow Monday. “It’s fewer insults, more insights and that policy contrast.”

Harris has been gaining in recent polling, with an average of national polls from The Hill/Decision Desk finding her 1.8 points ahead of Trump.

Recent polling from The New York Times/Siena College found Harris up 4 points against Trump in the three important battleground states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.

The Hill has reached out to the Trump campaign.
