Yellow weather warnings for wind and rain are in place as Storm Bert hits the West of England.
During a Christmas lights switch-on at the Cheltenham Brewery, cladding from the nearby Premier Inn blew down and landed on a car.
Reuben Spence, who was at the scene, said people had been in the car at the time and fire crews were at the scene.
“I was planning on being there when the lights turned on and then going for a birthday meal with a friend. It’s kind of changed the course of the evening,” Mr Spence added.
Meanwhile, the M48 Severn Bridge has been closed in both directions, and South Western Railway has asked people to only travel if essential, with longer journey times anticipated.
The rain and wind warnings are in place until Sunday evening, with the South West expected to see up to 75mm (3in) of rain.
‘Slow down’
The M48 Severn Bridge between Gloucestershire and Wales closes when gusts above 46mph are expected. National Highways recommends taking the M4 Prince of Wales bridge instead.
National Highways in the South West have urged motorists to slow down, to keep both hands on the steering wheel and to be aware of high -sided vehicles on more exposed roads.
In Wiltshire, the well-known Longleat estate closed to visitors for the day.
Scott Ashman, head of operations at the estate, said it was currently the “busiest time of the year”during their Festival of Light, but they had to make the “tough decision” to close for safety reasons.
“We had to close due to the high wind speeds, especially with the large lantern structures currently on site,” he added.
There have been a few changes to events in Swindon. The Christmas lights switch-on for the town centre has been postponed and will take place on 30 November. The Christmas market will be on, but will be smaller, with only the chalets operating.
The switch-on for the Old Town area in Swindon has been moved to 1 December.
Salisbury City Council said due to the weather, gazebos were not being allowed at the Charter Market.
Power cuts have been reported in parts of the region, including Somerset.
Also in the county, Bishops Lydeard AFC said the cup game against Cully Rangers had been rearranged for 3 December. It explained heavy rain on an “already soaked pitch” was the cause.
Christmas festivities in Gloucestershire have been affected – the lights will still be switched on at 17:00 GMT in Moreton-in-Marsh, but the outdoor market has been postponed.
In Cheltenham, some of the singers and entertainment in the town centre will perform inside Cav House, John Lewis, the Pump Rooms and the Wilson. The Suffolks Christmas Market, which was due to take place on Sunday, has been cancelled.
In Taunton, the Winterfest has been cancelled.
“The safety of our performers, contractors, traders, and all attendees is our top priority,” the event’s organisers posted on Facebook.
“With weather warnings in place, this decision was not made lightly but was the only responsible choice.”
The town’s Christmas lights will now be switched on on Sunday, organisers added.
