Celebrity radio host Charlemagne tha God accused former President Obama of “kissing the ring” after video of him laughing with President-elect Trump at former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral went viral.
“After you went so hard calling somebody a threat to democracy and calling somebody a fascist, and now you’re just chummy-chummy with the man?” Charlamagne said on his radio show “The Breakfast Club.” “You told us he was a threat to democracy! To me, that’s just terrible political optics.”
Obama and Trump were among the five presidents at Carter’s funeral on Thursday. In a video of the two sitting side by side, Trump can be seen saying something that makes Obama laugh.
Charlemagne’s co-hosts pushed back.
“They could have been saying anything. Trump could have said, ‘You smell that?’ and somebody farted, and he could have just laughed,” said DJ Envy. “You just never know what they’re saying.”
Following the funeral, Trump said that he thinks he and Obama “probably” like each other.
“It did look very friendly, I must say,” Trump told Fox News senior White House correspondent Peter Doocy. “I didn’t realize how friendly it looked. I saw it on your wonderful network, just a little while ago before I came in, and I said, ‘Boy, they look like two people that like each other.’ And we probably do.”
Trump did not provide details on what the conversation was about.
The video of Obama and Trump laughing is a far cry from the comments both have made about the other.
Trump led the “birther” movement during Obama’s tenure, falsely claiming the nation’s first Black president was was not born in America.
Obama, meanwhile, called Trump dangerous and a fascist on the campaign trail for Vice President Harris.
It’s that history Charlemagne pointed to as he insisted the interaction was disturbing.
“You got the last real leader of the Democratic Party, Barack Obama, laughing and giggling with Trump. Looking like, yeah, he’s kissing the ring,” Charlamagne said. “That’s what it looked like.”
