The New York Giants entered the offseason with an emphasis on filling out their quarterback room and did so with the re-signing of Tommy DeVito, the additions of Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, and the selection of Jaxson Dart in the 2025 NFL draft class.
The Giants have already announced that Wilson will start this season and Winston will serve as the primary backup. Dart will ultimately redshirt and develop behind the veterans as a rookie.
In the eyes of former Washington Commanders quarterback Robert Griffin III, that is a colossal mistake and a decision that warrants heavy criticism.
“The New York Giants have no idea what they are doing at QB. Signed Jameis Winston only to sign Russell Wilson to start over him and then drafted a rookie QB who will get minimal reps in his redshirt year behind those (two),” Griffin posted on X. “Lord have mercy.”
The Giants entered last season with a quarterback room consisting of Daniel Jones, Drew Lock, and DeVito. Due to several injuries, they eventually turned to Tim Boyle. That alone highlights how poorly constructed the personnel at the position was.
General manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll clearly sought to fix that and did so with two veterans with quality track records and a rookie they can mold for the future. It’s a more traditional approach than the moderate precedent, and it may be exactly what the Giants need.
In 2004, they signed veteran quarterback Kurt Warner before acquiring Eli Manning during the NFL draft and the football world knows how that turned out.
The Giants did exactly what they sought to do despite Griffin’s criticisms.
